“Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde” in Apollo Theatre

“Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde” in Apollo Theatre

On 23 April 2025, our class 3/4 and other classes from our school had an opportunity to participate in an Englishmusical performance based on the book entitled “Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde” by Robert Louis Stevenson.

Right at the start, there was a positive interaction performed by the main character from the stage with a randomly chosen member of the audience, who turned out to be our schoolmate Romek J. It made the whole experience feel more lively and engaging.

The performance was very energetic and dynamic, containing outstanding songs that were perfectly matched to the characters. The best of them was a song about secrets performed by the main protagonist and narrator at the same time, Mr Hyde. It touched the topic of some of the deadly sins: gluttony, greed, and lust. The music and the creation of the characters perfectly conveyed the atmosphere of the story.

An interesting change was the gender swap of Mr Utterson to Mrs Abigail, which brought a new perspective to the narrative. Another unique aspect was the performance of Mr Hyde, who acted as both a narrator-commentator and a figure of evil and a man corrupted to the core. His presence was intense at the beginning and very attention-grabbing throughout the whole performance.

A touching new theme in the musical was the tragic love story of Mr Jekyll and Miss Abigail. The intimate bond between the characters introduced to the plotan emotional depth and a demonstration of the power of love.

The play encouraged deep self-reflection. It made us think about our own nature, whether we sometimes lie to ourselves and how we need to be aware of the thin line between good and evil. It reminded us that once we cross certain lines, there may be no way back.

We are grateful for the opportunity to experience such an inspiring and thought-provoking show!
